Who we are

The Columbus Firemen’s Cheer Fund is recognized as Bartholomew County's oldest charity, relying entirely on public donations to operate. Established by the Columbus Fire Department in 1930, it began when compassionate firefighters realized that many underprivileged children likely received few, if any, gifts at Christmas. That year, the firefighters organized a party for around 50 needy children, providing gifts using $1,500 raised from the community. As the Cheer Fund's mission gained traction, the number of children receiving gifts grew significantly in the following years, prompting city firefighters to make it an annual initiative. In 1949, the fund distributed its first bicycle, and refurbished bikes became one of the most sought-after gifts.

Today, the Cheer Fund continues to evolve and find new ways to assist during the holiday season. In 2023, it provided gifts to nearly 2,000 children. The initiative is coordinated by the City of Columbus Firemen, supported by a volunteer Board of Directors, and relies on community contributions to meet its fundraising goals for purchasing gifts for underprivileged children in Bartholomew County. The public also plays a vital role in sorting, boxing, and delivering gifts. As times change, the Cheer Fund adapts to modern needs while staying true to the vision of its founders from the 1930s.

While the faces involved may change as firefighters retire and children grow up, the Cheer Fund remains dedicated to its mission.
